Large Survey Shows Serious Stigmatisation of People Living with HIV in China - 2008-9-26

UNAIDS and GBC funded survey by Renmin University shows high levels of stigma and widespread misconceptions on AIDS.

UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot is visiting China to encourage continued leadership and commitment and to mobilize a truly multi-sectoral response to AIDS in China. He will meet with government leaders, academia, ntional and internaiontal media, key opinion makers as well as people living with HIV, underlinning the importance of invovling them in the response to AIDS.

UNAIDS IN CHINA

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has an office in China since early 1996. The ten co-sponsoring agencies of UNAIDS (UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO, World Bank) are all involved in some way or another in AIDS activities in China . In particular, WHO, UNDP and UNICEF have collaborated with the Chinese program on a number of initiatives including surveillance, advocacy and training.

The cumulative number HIV positives reported at the end of October 2007 was 223,501, including 62,838 AIDS cases and 22,205 recorded deaths. in 2007, the Ministry of Health, UNAIDS and WHO has prepared this updated assessment of the AIDS epidemic in China. The estimation result showed by the end of 2007
