UNAIDS welcomes Chinese foundation’s agreement with African First Ladies

The China-Africa Business Council announces funds for supporting the elimination of new HIV infections in children

BEJING/ADDIS ABABA, 31 January 2016—The China-Africa Business Council (CABC) signed a memorandum with the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA). The signing took place at OAFLA’s annual General Assembly, held on the side-lines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
 The CABC raised $US 100 000, which will be used to support African countries to eliminate new HIV infections in children and keeping their mothers alive. Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director, attended the event as witness. The funds were raised from donations made by 18 000 people at fundraising events in China to the Increasing Love for Decreasing AIDS Fund, which was established as a special fund under China Social Assistance Foundation(CSAF) in 2015.
UNAIDS and CABC supported the creation of “Increasing Love for Decreasing AIDS Fund” which was established in 2015 to mobilize resources for African mothers and children.
“We are thrilled that the Chinese public has become involved in raising funds for Africa,” said Dr Catherine Sozi, UNAIDS Country Director to China. “This fundraising effort is a great example of how the Chinese people are committed to strengthening China-Africa cooperation and together reaching the end of the AIDS epidemic by 2030. ”
Wang Xiaoyong, Secretary-General of CABC said, “In this initial phase the fund is focusing mainly on the general public, especially young people. In the next phase, efforts will expand to include businesses. We hope to encourage more people and Africa-related enterprises to become engaged in our charitable program. Increasing Love for Decreasing AIDS Fund has brought Chinese and African people closer together. I’m more focused on how to use the platform of our business council to further cooperate with OAFLA.”
 
Facilitated by UNAIDS, the CABC and OAFLA Secretariat met at the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in December 2015. Under the new memorandum, the OAFLA Secretariat will use the Chinese donation in member countries and secretariatto support HIV-related programmes for mothers and children.
OALFA will also mobilize domestic resources and generate more influential outcomes by using this Chinese donation.
