World AIDS Day: China Pledges to Increase Efforts to Combat HIV/AIDS

China will step up its efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS as it committed to create new prevention mechanism and to invest further in research and development to find a cure for the virus, according to a report released by the government on Wednesday.

"We should deepen the reform of medical and health systems, make preventative, intervention and treatment services, and implement policies and measures such as blood testing and prevention," Liu Yandong, vice-premier of the state council said, adding that more work are needed to be done.

According to Today Online Publication, a report presented by the Centre for Disease and Control Prevention (CCDCP) showed that a shocking 2,300 people, most of whom were in between 15 and 24 years old, have been tested positive of HIV in China.

UNICEF projected that there would be an annual rise of HIV cases from 250,000 registered in 2015 to 400,000 by the year 2030, according to Xinhua. More

Increase in number of HIV cases in China raises concerns

A rise in HIV cases among young gay men and people over 60 in China has raised the question of whether the disease is spreading undetected among people who do not consider themselves at risk.

Figures from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention released ahead of World Aids Day on Thursday, show 96,000 new HIV cases in the first nine months of this year, putting China on track to exceed the 115,000 new cases recorded in 2015. The country accounts for about 3 per cent of new HIV cases worldwide, and 2 per cent of the total global HIV-positive population.

HIV testing kits at Chinese colleges and universities

In China, colleges and universities are taking action by making it easier for students to get tested.

Students in China can use the test to send a urine sample to a laboratory, and then access the results online. It can all be done completely anonymously.

The pilot project was initiated by China Association of STD/AIDS Prevention and Control. The program is particularly designed for college students and has spread to universities in Beijing, Yunnan, Sichuan, and Heilongjiang. This year's World AIDS Day's theme, Hands Up for Prevention, reminds us that we still have work to do to reduce HIV transmission if we are to meet the global target set out in the UN Political Declaration on Ending AIDS adopted by the UN General Assembly in June 2016. In order to end AIDS by 2030, the HIV response must be fast tracked and that includes reducing new HIV infections to less than 500,000 by 2020.

UNAIDS appoints new Goodwill Ambassador for China

With World Aids Day just around the corner, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has appointed a new Goodwill Ambassador for China—renowned actor and humanitarian Huang Xiaoming. The announcement was made at an event at the UNAIDS office in Beijing.

There were 654,000 people living with HIV in China by the end of September 2016. Young people, aged 15-24, are particularly vulnerable to the virus. In China, more than 7 percent of people living with HIV are young people.

According to Global Times, it was found that once the drug named as Albuvirtide has already been approved, experts perceive it as the world's first long-acting injection for HIV treatment. Developed by the Nanjing-based Frontier Biotechnologies Inc, the medicine is known to have the ability to block fusion of the viral and host cell membranes, which in turn, disrupts the HIV life cycle in its earliest stage.

Half of Chinese LGBT Face Discrimination in Hospitals, Says NGO

Fear of discrimination is a major concern for LGBT people in China when they have to access health care, with 61 percent of respondents in a new study on the status of LGBT health in China reporting that they are afraid of being treated differently by doctors because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Released from Beijing on Monday, the report showed that 46 percent of respondents had experienced discrimination from health care workers after their sexual orientation or gender identity was disclosed.
