Winner will be invited to UN Day in Beijing!
October 24th is the United Nations Day. As part of the celebrations of this year’s UN Day, UN China just kicked off #My SDG Story# campaign (SDG refers to Sustainable Development Goals). The best story teller who wins the campaign will be invited to Beijing to participate in the UN Day celebration on October 24th. In addition, UN China will select 17 stories to promote, and 4 of them will be filmed. A sample story is provided at the end of the article.
UNESCO particularly encourages good stories on education, sciences, culture, and communications and information.
Objectives
• Highlight importance of partnerships in realization of SDGs
• Inspire broad participation in the efforts
• Further increase visibility of SDGs
Concept
1. The stories should demonstrate efforts of non-governmental partners in pursuit of SDGs from the following perspectives:
• Innovation as accelerator for SDGs
• Youth participation
• Action/solution that influences policy and legislation and/or improve corporate standards
• Action/solution that has impact on a large number of people through creation of decent jobs, increased/improved education opportunity, improved livelihood and health, etc.
2. Photos: Each story should come with at least one high-resolution photo which can be used for social media and online promotion.

Background
• UN Day
UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.
• SDG
On 1 January 2016, the 17 SDGs of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development — adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an UN Summit — officially came into force. Over the next 15 years, all countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind. China has incorporated the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into national policy. China’s National Plan on Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has been published in 2016.

Zhao Yixin, a high school student in Beijing, used to think environmental protection was not connected to his life, until one day he found the smog in Beijing blocked him from playing basketball. "During such days we had to be trapped indoors. And I began to realize environment is part of us," Yixin said.
Yixin once hated the steel factories, which were ordered to close, were still working to generate more smog. But when his families drove through the poor counties of Hebei, he saw their damage to the environment was because it was the only way to make a living. He realized that the environment was often neglected when it comes to economic development, but the two were not necessarily contradictory.
By conducting research on how international investment affects corporate culture, he found some overseas projects would require the companies to adjust its management system to adapt to the local laws, including those involving environmental protection.
To dig deep on environment-related projects, Yixin attended 2017 UN China Youth Environment Forum jointly held by UN Environment, China Daily and the Center of Environmental Education and Communications of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, annual event aiming to integrate environmental education into Chinese youth quality development program.
