In order to further understand the changing face of China's HIV/AIDS epidemic, and allow it to tailor its response, the Chinese Ministry of Health (MOH), together with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO), has generated new estimates and a report for 2009.
By the end of 2009, it is estimated that 740,000 (560,000–920,000) people were living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in China, of whom 105,000 (97,000–112,000) were living with AIDS. Among those living with HIV/AIDS, 30.5% were female. National HIV prevalence was 0.057% (0.042%–0.071%), and the estimated number of new HIV infections in 2009 was 48,000 (41,000–55,000).
